Continuum and discontinuum modelling in tunnelling

Giovanni Barla, Marco Barla

Abstract

The modeling of continuum and discontinuum in tunneling is dicussed in the paper. A brief overview of closed-form solutions and numerical methods is presented. Several conclusions are given to facilitate the choice between continuum and discontinuum methods while modelling rock mass behavior at the design stage. The adequacy of discontinuum modeling, as related to rock mass classification methods and expected tunnel response to excavation, is discussed. An example of a completed tunnel is also presented.
