Modelling steel frames with masonry fill

Damir Markulak, Vladimir Sigmund, Ivan Radić

Abstract

Problems encountered in numerical modelling of masonry-filled steel frames subjected to earthquake action are presented. According to new European standards (EN 1998-1) an interactive action should be calculated for such composite systems, but calculation rules are not provided. A practical example is used to show most frequent possibilities for modelling behaviour of such structures based on the finiteelement method, and the need to use a practical approach to find solution to this problem is emphasized.
