Methods for testing resistance of concrete to freezing

Srđan Uzelac, Ana Hranilović Trubić

Abstract

Standard methods for testing resistance of concrete to freezing action and deicing salt are described in the paper. A special emphasis is placed on the advantages of a method recently devised as a means for determining the size of air voids using the air void analyzer (AVA) by which preventive actions may be taken to correct composition of the fresh concrete. It is stressed that, by using this method, the cost of subsequent repair can be avoided, while significant savings can be made in infrastructure construction. Capabilities of other testing methods are limited to mere presentation of factual information.
