Social sciences in the education of civil engineers

Abstract

The significance of social sciences in programs for the education of civil engineers in emphasized. The current situation is examined with critical eye and the need to make changes is explained. Professional activity of practicing engineers is analyzed and skills they need for successful work are defined. However, such skills are not acquired during university studies as the education is mostly oriented to specific highly specialized areas. The need to acquire knowledge in social sciences is emphasized even in case of engineers that have decided to make career in research work.
