Influence of pier and beam connections on seismic resistance of bridges

Abstract

The way in which the size and distribution of seismic forces on bridges is influenced by the connection between the superstructure and piers is considered. The analysis focuses on the Klicevica bridge which is situated on the Adriatic motorway between Zadar 2 and Benkovac. The rigid and hinge connections between piers and the overlying superstructure, including the case with elastomeric bearings, are modeled. The way in which the rigidity of elastomeric bearings influences seismic calculation results is also analyzed. Suggestions for the application of this analysis on similar bridges are presented in the final part of the paper.
