On the design of walls with openings

Abstract

This paper describes the procedure for the analysis of coupled shear walls that Veselin Simović introduced at the beginning of the nineteen-seventies. The given solution is derived in closed form by converting the system of equations of the force method to a linear difference equation with constant coefficients. The discussed procedure for the analysis of coupled shear walls is compared with the more "up-to-date" approach, based on the displacement method, which can be implemented only through computer calculations. Comparisons of results demonstrate limitations in the applicability of the procedure, i.e., for which wall types the results can be considered reliable.
